The Ancestors and Relatives of Henry Stratton

A plausible continuation of the ancestry of William Addams Reitwiesner

by William Addams Reitwiesner

Most printed sources, starting with Harriet Russell Stratton, A book of Strattons [1908], and including the books and websites which derive their information from them, say that my ancestor number 104, Henry Stratton, a Revolutionary War sailor who died in Bedford County, Virginia, in 1799, was the same person as Henry Stratton, son of Thomas Stratton of Chesterfield County, Virginia, and his wife Elizabeth Elam. John W. Pritchett, in a webpage formerly available at http://www.virginians.com/topics/1762.htm, showed, at [1762.3.2.3], that this connection is false, that Henry the son of Thomas remained in Chesterfield County long after my Henry was residing in Bedford County.

Pritchett posits (at [1762.3.3]) that my Henry Stratton of Bedford County was instead the otherwise untraced Henry Stratton who was a son of Edward and Anne (Batte) Stratton, and was thus a brother of Thomas Stratton and an uncle of the Henry Stratton of Chesterfield County that he [Henry of Bedford County] had previouly been identified with. This connection, while plausible, has not been confirmed. John Frederick Dorman, in Adventurers of Purse and Person [:] Virginia 1607-1624/5, Fourth edition [Baltimore: Genealogical, and cited below as "APP"], vol. III [2007], p. 166, at no. 20, concurs, referring to Henry of Bedford County as "(probably)" a son of Edward and Anne.

This webpage, below, is an exploration of the ancestry of the Henry Stratton who was a son of Edward and Anne (Batte) Stratton. The numbering in parentheses is numbered from me and is based on the assumption that the connection posited by Pritchett and accepted by Dorman is correct.
