According to an article in the 23 December 2006 issue of the Des Moines Register, a Roman Catholic nun who runs an orphanage in western Pennsylvania wrote to him, saying that he had been born in her orphanage (a home for unwed mothers), and offering to provide him some information on his birth parents.

Bud Vilsack's grandfather, Leopold Vilsack, was an owner of Iron City Brewery.
