17 -- The origin of Josephine Graves is not clear. Several competing theories have been advanced.

In one she is a daughter of Peter Graff, from Berne in Switzerland, and his wife Catharine, born in Luxembourg. The following census entries support this identification:

In another theory, she is the Josephine Graves, WF 5, b. Missouri, at Rochester twp., Andrew Co. [sandwiched between Nodaway and Buchanan cos.], Missouri on 11 Aug. 1870, in household of Sophia McDermot, WF 68, keeping house, $8400 real estate, $920 personal estate, b. Ohio; Zachariah McDermot, WM 20, farmer, b. Missouri; Sarah Roberts, WF 16, at home, b. Illinois, attending school; and Josephine Graves (1870 U.S. Census, Andrew Co., Missouri, Rochester twp., Series M593, Roll 755, p. 339, ##206-206, lines 4-7; next door, lines 2-3, are Elizabeth Roberts, 50, $100 personal estate, b. Virginia, and George Roberts, 13, at home, appar. not in school, b. Illinois). This Josephine may have been the Josephine Graves, WF 14, servant, b. Missouri, parents' birthplace not known, working in household of Henry Ackerman, b. Switzerland ca. 1830, who lived next to Drury W. Graves in Grant twp., Missouri, in 1880. This Josephine Graves may have been a daughter of Drury W. Graves, b. Indiana ca. 1835, living Grant twp., Nodoway Co., Missouri in 1880. In 1860, at Platte, Andrew Co., Missouri, he was 25, with wife M. A., aged 23, b. Kentucky (this was Mary Ann Dillon, whom he married in Andrew Co., Missouri 4 May 1854 (per "Missouri Marriages" database at www.ancestry.com, noted 21 Jan. 2006). In 1870 Drury's wife was Elizabeth ____, 19, b. Illinois, and in 1880 she was 29. In 1880, in Grant twp., Nodoway Co., Missouri, they lived next door to Henry Ackermann, whose household contained the 14-year old servant girl Josephine Graves. Problem: Josephine Graves is not in Drury's household in 1870, when she would be a 4 to 6-year old child incapable of living on her own. Was Josephine perhaps a niece, rather than a daughter?

In all the extant censuses taken during her married life (1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930), Mrs. Josephine Mathers gave her birthplace as Missouri but was less consistent about her parents' birthplaces: Missouri (1900); "United States" (1910); "don't no" [sic] (1920); and Missouri (1930).

996 & 997 have other descendants, such as:

FURTHER NOTES

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) publishes a Patriot Index, a list of persons whose honorable service in the cause of independence during the American Revolution renders their female descendants eligible for membership in the NSDAR. Several ancestors of Marshall Bruce Mathers III appear in the Patriot Index, including:

    Sebastian Hassler (number 380)
    Stephanus Hassler (number 190)

While Mr. Mathers is not eligible for membership in the NSDAR (by not being female), he is eligible for membership in the equivalent organization for men, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
