The Ancestors and Relatives of Henry Stratton

A possible continuation of the ancestry of William Addams Reitwiesner

by William Addams Reitwiesner

The parentage and ancestry of my ancestor number 105, Sarah Hampton, is (currently) unknown. Some websites claim that she was Sarah, daughter of Richard Hampton of Prince William County and Fauquier County, Virginia, but no evidence has been found to support this claim.

Note that my ancestor Sarah Hampton married, in Cumberland County, Virginia, on 26 December 1753, a man named Henry Stratton. Richard Hampton's will was dated 24 November 1766 and probated in Fauquier County, Virginia, on 22 December 1766. In his will he refers to his daughter as "Sarah", not as "Sarah Stratton", even though my ancestor had been married for more than a dozen years by then. This may, or may not, be significant.

In any case, what follows below is the ancestry of Sarah, daughter of Richard Hampton, as extracted from John Frederick Dorman, Adventurers of Purse and Person [:] Virginia 1607-1624/5, Fourth edition [Baltimore: Genealogical, and cited below as "APP"], vol. II, pp. 247-260 [Sarah appears on p. 251 as number 36], and from Virginia Lee Hutcheson Davis, Tidewater Virginia Families [Baltimore: Genealogical, 1989, and cited below as "TVF"], pp. 313-338 [Sarah appears on p. 328]. The numbering in parentheses is numbered from me and is based on the assumption that the connection claimed by the various websites (that my ancestor Sarah Hampton was a daughter of Richard Hampton) is correct.
