NOTES

1 -- Brockholst Livingston was a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1806 to 1823.

10 -- Maurice Power was Lieutenant-Governor of Saint Lucia, in the British Antilles, from 1852 to 1857.

16 -- Gouverneur Kortright was a prominent yachtsman.

19 -- Kortright Cruger had been expelled from the Masons in the 1880s for clandestinely conferring degrees on people, and he spent the next twenty years organizing fake lodges by way of avenging his wrongs and increasing his revenues. He was arrested for this in Jersey City, N. J., in March 1904. See The New York Times, 17 March 1904, p. 2, and 9 Sept. 1904, p. A3. In an attempt to curtail his activities, the New York State Legislature enacted a law making it a crime to use without authority the title of any organization or any imitation of such name, so he filed suit to have the law declared unconstitutional. See The New York Times, 21 Oct. 1906, p. 12.

21 -- Rev. Gouverneur Cruger was pastor of the Church of Divine Love, at Sunset, near Montrose, N. Y.

33 -- In August 1895, while he was confined in an asylum for the insane in Mamaroneck, N. Y., his wife filed for divorce from him, citing "his disgraceful conduct", his "living the life of an inebriate, consorting with immoral persons", and stating he "was wasting his income in riotous living while his wife was without any means for her support." See The New York Times, 2 Aug 1895, p. 14.

34 -- In October 1906 he pleaded guilty to second degree grand larceny (passing a worthless check for $30). See The New York Times, 3 Oct 1906, p. 3.

40 c -- Edmond Genet, a member of the Lafayette Escadrille, was the first American aviator to fall after the United States entered World War I.
