NOTES

1 -- William Iucho was a composer of popular music. He published an early transcription of Arkansas Traveller, and is often credited with having composed it, though the actual composer was Sanford C. Feulkner.

According to an article in the Brooklyn Eagle, 29 April 1880, page 4, William Iucho had been visiting last Sunday (the 25th) at the home of his son in law in New York when "he was suddenly taken with the illness that carried him off". The funeral was from his home, 124 Hoyt street, on the 29th, and he was buried in Greenwood.

No death certificate is on file on Manhattan for William Iucho.

9 -- Commander J. D. J. Kelley was editor of The New York Herald.

10 -- Her marriage was annulled in New York State because the marriage was in violation of the laws of Great Britain which forbade a man to marry the daughter of a sister of his deceased wife. See New York Times, 1900 Sept. 28, p. 3, and Chicago Daily Tribune, 1901 March 21, p. 3.

11 -- After Morrell's death (which was caused by his being thrown from his road wagon when his horses took fright [New York Times 1 Jun 1893 p. 1]), his widow was engaged to marry Henry P. Brookman, but it was announced without explanation that the wedding was called off [New York Times 22 Nov. 1896 p. 10 and Boston Daily Globe 27 Jan. 1898 p. 6]. She then married Hamilton Cary, and a few years later her husband [Cary] and her relatives applied for a commission of lunacy to investigate into her sanity, alleging that her mind was failing because of overindulgence in drugs and liquors [New York Times 8 June 1904 p. 9, Washington Post 29 July 1905 p. 1, New York Times 29 July 1905 p. 3, Washington Post 26 April 1906]. Within six months she was dead [New York Times 15 Jan 1906 p. 9]. See also Washington Post 10 Aug. 1919 p. A3.

12 -- He was a godson of General Robert E. Lee. His wife was the first woman to receive the degree of Doctor of Laws from New York University.

18 c -- In December 1958, Miss Isabel Russell was charged with murder in the death of her father. In September his pajama-clad body had been found [by Isabel] sprawled in the shrubbery in front of his home. Because of his heart ailment and the failure of police investigators to find evidence of foul play or violence, his death was believed to be natural even though no cause was given. An autopsy revealed that his back had been broken and his chest fractured, leading to an intensive investigation which led to the murder charges. At her arraignment, her attorney said that she [Isabel] had a long history of confinement for mental disturbances. See Chicago Daily Tribune 18 Dec 1958 p. B2.
