NOTES

1 -- Henry Iohn Seaman was elected to the United States Congress as a candidate of the American Republican Party to represent Richmond County, N. Y. (i.e., Staten Island) in the 29th Congress (1845-1847).

The American Republican Party was a nativist political party operating almost exclusively in New York City and its rural neighbors (such as Brooklyn and Staten Island) in the mid-1840s. It is usually confused with a different, but similarly nativist, political party operating in the mid-1850s named the American Party but which, because of its secretive nature, was commonly referred to as the "Know-Nothing" Party. The "Know-Nothings" were the later party, not the earlier party.

Works which explore nativism in New York in the 1840s, and which usually don't go into much detail as to nativist activities in Richmond County, include, in no particular order:

2 -- Andrew Benham was a Rear Admiral, U. S. Navy.

7 -- She was White House Social Secretary in the Wilson, Roosevelt, and Truman administrations.

12 a -- Malcolm Kilduff was an assistant White House Press Secretary in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.

13 -- Charles Stewart Trench was a great-nephew of Frederic Trench (1755-1840), who was created Baron Ashtown [I.] in 1800, and was included in the special remainder to that Peerage. See various issues of Burke's and Debrett's.
