The Ancestors of Lucy Walter

Lucy Walter, alias "Mrs Barlow", the "browne, beautiful bold but insipid creature" of Evelyn, was from a good family in Pembrokeshire. Her ancestry is given in Lord George Scott, Lucy Walter, Wife or Mistress [London: Harrap, 1947], chart facing p. 34 (see also J. F. Rees, "The parents of Lucy Walter", in Studies in Welsh History [Cardiff: University of Wales Press, 1965], pp.121-129; Francis Green, "Walter of Roch Castle", West Wales Historical Review, Vol. V [1915], pp. 271-290; and F. Jones, "The Squires of Hawksbrook", The Transactions of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion, Session 1937, pp. 339-355 for further details) as follows:

Ancestry of Lucy Walter
1 Lucy Walter
* ... [ca. 1630]
+ ... [bur. Huguenot Cemetery, Paris, Letters of Administration granted 6 Dec. 1658]
Her issue:
A.          (by Charles Prince of Wales, later King Charles II) James Crofts, later Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth (b. Rotterdam 9 Apr. 1649, beheaded on Tower Hill, London, 15 July 1685).
For arguments that Charles II had married Lucy Walter, and that therefor Monmouth was legitimate, see Lord George Scott, Lucy Walter, Wife or Mistress [London: Harrap, 1947]; D. J. Porritt, Duke of Monmouth [Elms Court: Stockwell, 1950], pp. 15-24, and J. N. P. Watson, Captain-General and Rebel Chief [London: George Allen, 1979], pp. 275-277. See also T. G. Lamford, The Defence of Lucy Walter: putting to right a towering injustice [Ammanford: Salus, 2001]. Twice during the Exclusion Crisis, on both 6 January and 3 March 1679, Charles II formally denied, at the privy council, that he had ever been married to Lucy.

Monmouth married Anne Scott, suo jure Countess of Buccleuch, by whom he had (in addition to others):
AA.          James Scott, Lord Dalkeith, ancestor of the Dukes of Buccleuch.
Monmouth had several bastards, including:
AB. Capt. Henry Crofts, who "For Debauchery and Irreligion he was one of the vilest Men that has set foot in Boston." Capt. Crofts died in Boston, unmarried, on 14 Dec. 1702 [NCP IX:65 note (f)].
B. Mary Walter, b. 's-Gravenhage 6 May 1651, d. 1693, m. (1) William Sarsfield, m. (2) William Fanshawe. Mary was born after Charles and Lucy had separated, and Charles never acknowledged paternity of Mary. Other possibilities for Mary's father include Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington, and (the most likely candidate) Theobald Taaffe, 1st Earl of Carlingford.
Mary's issue by Sarsfield includes:
BA. Charlotte Sarsfield, for whom see Richard K. Evans, The Ancestry of Diana Princess of Wales [Boston: NEHGS, 2007], at numbers 267 and 707.
